The FT-86 is built by Toyota, and comes with an engine co-developed by Toyota and Subaru. It shares the same body style and many other components as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. It was first produced in 2012 after various concept cars were revealed.
With many modern affordable vehicles being produced with front-wheel drive drivetrain layouts, the FT-86 offers an affordable rear-wheel drive option with sporty handling. Its engine is small, but produces enough power to get the light weight vehicle going quickly.

The small, sporty design of the FT-86 made it an instant hit with racers and drifters. It replaced the Toyota Celica in some of the series Toyota had a race team competing in.
