When talking about a "ball joint" in an automotive context, it is typically referring to the point or points where a ball-in-socket joint is used to allow suspension articulation and steering movement near or at the steering knuckle. This component doesn't have any other exceedingly popular names, so the somewhat generic name of "ball joint" has stuck. However, other components are also sometimes equipped with a ball-in-socket joint, such as tie rods and sway bar link ends.
