Displacement is a general term used to describe how much of something gets moved elsewhere due to an action. In an engine, displacement refers to how much air all the pistons can move (and technically, compress, but this excludes the extra space left in the combustion chamber when the piston is at top dead center.) once, and this is usually measured in either cubic inches or more commonly, liters.
